According to Multiple Sources, the New York Yankees have signed catcher and former Met Rene Rivera to a minor league contract.Rivera who is 26 will report to Triple A Scranton. He has not had to much Major League experience., as he started his career with the Seattle Mariners in 2004 and played his last major league game in 2006. He was then brought to Spring Training by the Mets, but was later released.

I am guessing they just want to bring in a guy that has experience rather than rush Jesus Montero to help out Francisco Cervelli until Jorge Posada returns.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets have contacted the Colorado Rockies about acquiring Luis Castillo, as the Rockies are looking to improve from their utility man Melvin Mora.

I assume the Mets would eat a large portion of his remaining money if Colorado was interested in his services. I would pull any deal in a minute my only question is who would take his spot? Alex Cora, Ruben Tejada, or maybe their having Daniel Murphy work on second? Either way try to get it done Omar so we can finally end the Luis Castillo Era in New York.

The second Yankee in as many days has been placed on the disabled list for an extended period of time. Jorge Posada joins Nick Johnson on the disabled list and is scheduled to miss 3 to 4 weeks with a hairline fracture in his right foot.

In my eyes, though the Yankees still have big bats such as Jeter, Teixeira, and A-Rod, you have to say to yourself this is a problem now that Posada, Granderson, and Johnson are on the DL.

The Mets will make a roster move to recall Wednesday's starter R.A Dickey to start Wednesday against the Nationals. There is news that Jenrry Mejia will be the one to get sent down, the Mets want Mejia to get some more experience as a starting pitcher. Also Jerry Manuel stated, that with Dickey going Wednesday at the Nats, it will be Hisanori Takahashi who will get the nod friday against thr rival New York Yankees.

I do not remember a game with so many exciting moments, as a Mets fan. One game comes to mind which was last May in Boston with the Omir Santos HUGE clutch home run off Papelbon in the ninth. Last nights game had everything. 2 home runs by a rookie & a vet. A walk off home run. A pretty lenghty pitching performance, and an inbcredible number 1 web jem courtesy of Ike Davis. So will this game propel the Mets for the rest of this home stand? I don't know but all i know is that in my mind last nights game was the best.

Josh Beckett has been throwing at Yankees all night, Cervelli, Gardner and now Cano. On a 2-2 count Beckett fired a cutting fastball right at the back knee of Robinson Cano. Cano appeared in a ton of pain barely able to walk to first. He eventually got there, but after the first pitch to Nick Swsiher, Cano took himself out of the game as the knee stiffened up, and appeared swollen. We will wait on news on Cano.

During Andy Pettittes last start, Wednesday against Baltimore, he felt tightness in his left shoulder forcing Joe Girardi to take him out of the game with only 77 pitches and the Yanks up 6-1. Pettitte was having a fantastic start until the incident. Girardi went to Sergio Mitre for 3.2 innings, and the Yanks won 7-5. Pitching:
Well the score tells the story for tonight's ball game as Johan Santana the ace of the Mets staff was lit up and was charged with 10 runs over 3.2 innings. Santana just did not look comfortable and had trouble throwing strikes. He also did not put batters away when he was ahead of the count. I don't believe he has any physical problems, i think it was just a hiccup for him. Over Santana's 6 starts he has averaged an 89.3 MPH fastball, but tonight was sort of a good sign as he was hitting 91 all night long. For the bullpen following Santana, Hisanori Takahashi, Pedro Feliciano, Fernando Nieve, and K-Rod all made appearances.

Offense:
The Mets offense got off to a quick start as they got 3 runs in the first for Santana thanks to a David Wright bomb which was his fifth of the year. In the top of the fourth with Jeff Francoeur aboard Rod Barajas smacked his sixth homerun off the foul pole in left and gave the Mets a 5-2 lead at that point. Jose Reyes is a concern for me lately, as after the first game when he was in the third hole he has not been able to hit and is swinging at the first pitches of his at bats very often. Reyes went 1 for 13 in this series.

Pitching:

Phil Hughes was incredible today over his 7 innings of work. All of his pitches were great today including his cutter and curveball both looked great and also had great velocity on his fastball. The one reason this season i have not trusted Hughes was because in his first start he walked 5 Angels, in his next start almost threw a no-hitter. In his last start though he walked 4 more batters, so we got the feeling he is going to be an erratic pitcher. In this game though i saw the same Hughes that i saw on the 21st of April as he almost threw a no-hitter. Following Hughes, recently called up Mark Melancon who replaced Curtis Granderson on the roster pitched the final two innings despite giving up a 3 run homerun to Paul Konerko in the ninth.

Offense:

You know your team is a winner when two of your best players( Curtis Granderson & Alex Rodriguez ) are out and you still score 12 runs and get 16 hits against an All-Star pitcher in Mark Buerhle. Brett Gardner got the scoring going today with an RBI single in the 2nd, and then he blasted his first home run of the season in the 4th innings which gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th inning, one of the hottest hitters in the league, Robinson Cano stepped up and smacked his 9th home run this season, it was a 3 run shot and it gave the Yanks a 5-0 lead. An inning later, Nick Swisher who has been struggling blasted his 4th homerun of the season a two run shot to right field and it gave the Yankees a 7-0 lead. In the 7th, with the bases loaded and Derek Jeter up, he took a bases loaded walk to force in Jorge Posada, and at that point it was 8-0. In the same inning and again the bases loaded with Nick Johnson up, he smashed a two run RBI double to center to score Brett Gardner and Ramiro Pena, that made the score 10-0. A batter later with Jeter & Johnson on base and Mark Teixeira up, Mark who has an awesome day ripped a 2 run RBI double and at the point it was 12-0.

Game Picture:

The Game Picture was a tough decision, for me it was between Phil Hughes, Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, or Mark Teixeira. I went with Phil Hughes, just because he threw a shutout through 7 innings. If i did not pick Hughes, i would of probably given it to Mark Teixeira, because once the calendar flips to May he can hit like crazy as he went 4 for 5.

The Yankees will welcome the Baltimore Orioles fresh off a sweep of the Red Sox, as it will be CC Sabathia for the Yankees and he will be opposed by Jeremy Guthrie who is winless this season. First Pitch will be 7:05 tomorrow night at the Stadium.

UPDATE 4:43 PM:
During the PostGame, when asked if Alex Rodriguez was hurt, Joe Girardi said he will be in the lineup tomorrow. He said he was out of the lineup today because he has played every inning of every game thus far this season. He did say that A-Rod did feel something while running the bases yesterday and he is very stiff but will be in the lineup tomorrow

There is a question brewing around the Yankees right now that has to do with Alex Rodriguez. During today's broadcast Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay said multiple reports have come out to say that Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez has a pain in his knee, but the Yankees are not sure if there is any structural damage. Now at the same time other reports are saying it's just a day off for A-Rod.

After smashing into the fence while making a catch during tonight's ball game and getting hit with a pitch in the elbow, Jeff Francoeur has endured a good amount of pain throughout his body. We are being told after getting taken out of the ball game after he was hit with the pitch, the X-Rays were negative and he is day to day with a bruised elbow.

Pitching:
Well if you look at the pitching line for Niese tonight, it pretty much said Niese was INCREDIBLE! Not only did he shut down a major league lineup for 7 innings while only walking 1 and striking out 7, but it was the Phillies he shut down a lineup with names such as Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, and Jayson Werth. Everything was working for Niese tonight, he was moving fast and had his curveball working well. He got in to jams in 1 or 2 innings but otherwise was superb. Following Niese, Jenrry Mejia was brought on to pitch the 8th and gave up 1 hit but no runs. In the ninth, Manny Acosta took the ball and while walking one and giving up one hit did not give up any runs and kept the winning streak alive for the Mets.

Offense:
The Mets bats came to play today as not only did they score 9 runs but they hit 4 home runs. The top of the 2nd is were they started to pour on as David Wright got the scoring started by hitting a fast ball out beyond center field for his 4th homerun of the season. Two batters later, Jeff Francoeur stepped up and smacked a fastball down and in out of the ball park to give the Mets a quick 3-0 lead going into the 3rd. In the top of the 5th, the Mets hit their third homerun with a solo homerun by Rod Barajas which gave the Mets a 4-1 lead. In the top of the 7th, Rod Barajas continued his stellar night as he stroked an RBI double to right field, which scored Jeff Francoeur and it gave the Mets a 5-1 lead. In the same inning after Jon Niese walked, Angel Pagan hit a two run triple to score Rod Barajas & Jon Niese, and it gave the Mets a 7-1 lead at that point. Two batter later in the same inning with Jose Reyes up he pulls a base hit through the right side of the infield to score Pagan and give the Mets a 8-1 lead. The Mets capped their scoring off tonight with another Rod Barajas home run his second of the night in the 9th inning with led to New York's convincing 9-1 over the Phillies.

Pitching:
Andy Pettitte came into the night as one of the hottest pitchers in the Majors. Unfortunately their is always a brief hiccup when your on a roll and Pettitte endured that tonight. Over 6 inning he gave up 4 runs while walking 2. I felt like he left the ball out in front of the plate a lot more than usual and looked like he might of been not into it from the get go, thankfully for him he has the offense behind him. Following Pettite, Alfredo Aceves who earned the victory threw a scoreless seventh despite walking one. In the eighth inning, Damaso Marte & Joba Chamberlain teamed up to get the hold for Mo, Martes 2nd hold and Jobas 5th hold of the season. In the ninth, Mariano Rivera shut it down one, two, three which included 2 strikeouts.

Offense:
Already being down 3-0 in the bottom of the first, Alex Rodriguez doubled to left which scored Derek Jeter to give the Yankees their first run. In the same inning, with Mark Teixeira on third, Robinson Cano hit a sharp base hit to left which scored Mark, and put the Yankees within one run. In the bottom of the sixth, Derek Jeter hit a home run to left field,his fourth, which tied the ball game up as it was a 2 run shot and as Brett Gardner also scored on the homer. With the game tied at 4 in the bottom of the seventh, Derek Jeter stepped into the box again and lined a triple to right field, Francisco Cervelli, and Brett Gardner scored on the triple.

Pitching:
Oliver Perez did not have much of anything tonight, meaning he was not awful just was not good. He was a walk machine tonight as it looked as if he just could not hit his spots and could not grip his pitches. He was always blowing on his hands as he looked like he was freezing. He could only go into the fourth luckily thanks to Takahashi the damage for Perez was not worse. Following Perez, as i mentioned Hisanori Takahashi was brought on and was great as he went 3.1 Innings, only allowing 1 Run, while striking out 5. After Takahashi, Jenrry Mejia was brought on and walked one batter but escaped the inning unharmed. Finishing off the game, was Raul Valdes who let up 1 run in the ninth but still closed it out for the Mets 6th straight win.

Offense:
When the pitching was not good the Offense came through, especially David Wright. The first run came in the bottom of the first when after Angel Pagan got on, Jose Reyes knocked him in with a single up the middle which gave the Mets a 1-0 lead. In the same inning with Reyes on first, Jason Bay ripped his third triple of the season( which is his total of last year )to score Jose Reyes and gave the Mets a 2-0 lead. The third run came on a Ike Davis sac fly to score Jason Bay, which gave the Mets a 3-0 lead going into the 2nd inning. The Mets scored a few runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the fourth Mets run came on an RBI single by David Wright to score Angel Pagan. The fifth & sixth run's came in the same inning when Ike Davis took a pitch and belted it into the gap which scored Jose Reyes and David Wright. In the bottom of the sixth the Mets scored the final four runs of the night. The first of the inning came with the bases loaded and Jose Reyes up, he grounded a pitch to the shortstop Jamey Carroll, and Carroll went for the force and home and made a bad throw which allowed Henry Blanco to score. The final 3 runs came with the bases loaded and David Wright up, he belted a three run RBI triple into right center which scored Angel Pagan, Luis Castillo, and Jose Reyes. David Wright had a huge night tonight and also reached a milestone as he secured his 1,000 major league hit. Congrats David!

Pitching:
Phil Hughes was a bit erratic tonight, but only let up 1 run, but did walk 4 batters. His fastball was missing the spot Posada wanted, and only struck out 2 batters. Following Hughes, Boone Logan was brought on but let up a run which was earned. After Logan, Dave Robertson was brought on who ultimately took the loss tonight, as he did not have much of anything. He only got 1 batter, and gave up 2 runs and gave up 3 hits. After Robertson, Alfredo Aceves was brought on and gave up a run but was not earned.

Offense:
The Yankees offense scattered 9 hits but only scored 4 runs. Their first run was un earned for the pitcher as with Swisher on base, Brett Gardner hit a grounder to Miguel Tejada at third, and Tejada miss played it which allowed Swisher to come and score. The Yankees second run came in the top of the fourth as Jorge Posada hit his 5th homerun of the season, and gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead. The final two runs came in the bottom of the 9th as the Yankees were trying to come back against the Orioles down 5-2. The first run in the 9th came on another error by the Orioles and this time it was Cesar Izturis who botched a ground ball by Brett Gardner which again allowed Nick Swisher to score. The second run in the 9th came on a Mark Teixeira RBI single to score Ramiro Pena.

Pitching:
Starting in the 2nd inning Santana started his shaky but successful outing as he threw a total of 115 pitches over 6 innings, including a 36 pitch inning in the 2nd. Santana's command was off and looked like he could not hit the outside part of the plate. His velocity was down around 86-89 as he only hit 90 a few times. In the Postgame, Santana said he feels great just the wind was blowing and sometimes could not find a grip. Either way he competed like Johan Santana and had the strike out pitch going for him as he was nearing the end. The changeup looked good as well. Following Santana's 6 shutout innings, Fernando Nieve was brought on and threw 2 shutout innings. In the ninth, having a four nothing lead, Pedro Feliciano was brought on and got his three outs despite walking Russell Martin. Feliciano shut it down to seal the deal on the Mets 5th straight win.

Offense:
The Mets offense scored a total of 4 runs over 8 hits. There first run came in the bottom half of the 2nd inning, when with the bases loaded and Rod Barajas up a wild pitch was thrown by Hiroki Kuroda which allowed David Wright to score the 1st run of the game. The Mets second run came on a huge blast by Jason Bay which was his first as a Met to give them a 2-0 lead. Bay really looks like he is coming out of his slump. The Final two runs came in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded and Luis Castillo up he ripped a two runs RBI single up the plate to put the score at 4-0.

Pitching:

Javier Vazquez started for the Yankees this afternoon in L.A., in hopes of salvaging the final game of the series to win their 13 game, but it did not go as planned. Everything fell apart in the 4th inning when Vazquez gave up 5 runs, again not lasting more than 6innings. Boone Logan and Alfredo Aceves than threw 2.1 scoreless innings, to leave the game up to Damaso Marte who just made things even worse. After an indecision of whether or not to pitch to Kendry Morales, on a 3-0 count, Marte threw an 89 mph fastball right down the middle and Kendry did not miss hit. A three run bomb over the center field wall, and the rest was history. Sergio Mitre finshed the day with 1 scoreless inning.

Offense:

Most of the Yankees damage was done in the second inning against Kazmir, after throwing at Robinson Cano Jorge Posada stepped up to the plate, knocking his next pitch over the center field wall for his 3rd of the year. Marcus Thames then followed with a double and scored on a fielders choice hit by the captain Derek Jeter. The final run came in the 6th inning of Kazmir as he bombed his 5th homer and a little sweet revenge on a hanging curveball, and his 3rd homer off Kazmir this season.

In the PreGame of WFAN yesterday, when Jerry Manuel was asked, Manuel said he has not made any decisions, and Hisanori Takahashi could be a candidate if Maine were to miss his next start. What Yankee are we suprised with the Most?

When i look at the Yankees season thus far i think of their 11-5 record and knowing that they are the defending World Champions. Coming into the season though, their were quite a few questions marks including, How Nick Johnson & Brett Gardner will play and if they could fill the shoes of Johnny Damon & Hideki Matsui? Well Brett Gardner is riding high with a .310 AVG and 8 stolen bases in 14 games. Nick Johnson who was brought in to get on base hasn't done much of that lately but still maintains a .375 on base percentage. Looking at the Yankees though the player who has surprised me the most would have to be Phil Hughes who nearly threw a no hitter in Oakland on the 21st of April. Phil Hughes has been lights out, in 2 starts owns an ERA of 2.19 while allowing 3 earned runs in 12.1 innings, and striking out 16 while only walking 7. I have to think back before the season to what i really expected from Hughes which probably was just to keep the Yankees in the ball game he was starting until their offense got going. Hughes has been ANOTHER force in that rotation, and once they get Javier Vazquez going this team will be scary as we all know and have seen before.

According to WFAN, the Mets have made the decision to start Henry Blanco not only today but tomorrow as well. Blanco will catch Niese today & Pelfrey tomorrow.
Blanco works well with BIG PELF, and i also think it is just a good rest for Barajas who has been starting almost every game. It will also get Barajas fully ready for the 3 game series against the Dodgers Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

Pitching:
The Pitching was stellar for the Mets tonight, as through 3.2 Innings John Maine threw 63 pitches but then exited due to an injury to his non pitching arm. After John Maine exited in the 4th, Hisanori Takahashi was brought on and was outstanding and through 3 innings struck out 7 batters while giving up 1 run. With the holds in the ball game was Raul Valdes, Pedro Feliciano, and the save went to Francisco Rodriguez who lived on the edge of a bridge in the ninth but escaped trouble.

Offense:
Jose Reyes hit third for the 1st time in his career, with Angel Pagan leading off. The Mets got their scoring started in the bottom of the fifth down 1-0 when Ike Davis hit his first major league career homerun which tied the ball game up at 1 a piece. In the bottom of the 6th, an encouraging sign from Jason Bay as he stepped up and lined a RBI triple to score Jose Reyes to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. In the same inning with Jason Bay on third, David Wright had a productive at bat and got a RBI on a sac fly to center field which scored Bay. The Final two runs came in the bottom of the 7th, with Pagan on second and Castillo on 1st, and one out Jose Reyes popped a pitch up in the infield which was dropped by Chipper Jones. Reyes was called out on an infield fly rule. Pagan and Castillo advanced and after Pagan ran to third swiped home and made the ball game a 4-2. The Final run came on a David Wright RBI Single back through the middle to score Luis Castillo.

Mets Interested in Roy Oswalt

The New York Mets have expressed interest in Astros starting pitcher Roy Oswalt, according to Adam Rubin from ESPN New York. Although the trade is highly unlikely due to Oswalts current contract with the stros that includes a no-trade clause. The right hander is owed 15 million this season, 16 million in 2011, and a 16 million dollar club option for 2012, with a 2 million dollar buyout. So we will see what happens with the Mets and GM Omar Minaya, if they do try to pull the trigger on Oswalt, it would certainly improve their pitching staff.

Manny Acosta on his way up North; Igarashi on his way to DL

Manny Acosta who was once a former Brave, and who the Mets claimed off waivers from the Braves is on his way up north & will replace a key member of the Mets bullpen Ryota Igarashi as he has been placed on the 15 day DL. Igarashi suffered a strained left hamstring last night during the ball game. Through 3 seasons in the Majors, Acosta has a career 3.55 ERA in 103 games with the Braves. Acosta will be available for tonights ball game.

Beltran Return Delayed

It seems that though the Mets are winning ball games they can't seem to get away from negative headlines as Carlos Beltran who visited Dr. Steadman in Colorado earlier today, was told to delay resuming the baseball activities he was supposed to start when the season began; no word on when he will visit Dr. Andrews again.

This is bad news! Reyes is turning it on, Santana, Pelfrey, Perez, & Niese are pitching well as well as the bullpen-- Wright & Bay will heat up, and Francoeur will reheat! Pitching:
Mike Pelfrey for his third consecutive start was incredible & earned his third win of the year. His fastball & splitfinger looked nasty; as everything was working for him tonight. Again tonight we did not see any of the pacing around the mound, or the taking off the cap, he was just focused all seven innings he was out there. Following Pelfrey, Ryota Igarashi came into the ballgame with a 2-0 lead, but after getting the first two outs of the inning, exited the game with a leg injury. Fernando Nieve struck out the final batter in the 8th, in his 10th game of the year. After a two run homerun ruined Francisco Rodriguez's chances for getting his first save of the season, he shut it down in the ninth in a non-save situation.

Offense:
The Mets scattered 9 hits tonight, even without a contribution from David Wright or Jason Bay as they both continued to struggle. Jose Reyes broke out of his slump with a 4 hit performance tonight including a two run triple were he looked like the Jose Reyes of the past. Following Reyes driving in the two runs; the final two runs came on a Fernando Tatis pinch hit homerun in the 8th, to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Things to Note:

Reyes looked outstanding with a 4-5 performance.
Mike Pelfrey went 7; his ERA stands at 0.86!

Pitching:
Jon Niese looked much more comfortable tonight against the Cubs rather then his previous start against the Rockies when he gave up 5 earned runs. Tonight his curve ball looked much sharper along with his fastball that helped him tie his career high in strikeouts in a game at 7. He was unable to get his first win of the season, the offense did not wake up until the seventh inning. Following Niese, Fernando Nieve was brought on and pitched 1.1 Innings, were he allowed 1 hit but no runs, and lowered his ERA to 5.00 and earned his first win of the season out of the pen. After Niese & Nieve, Jenrry Mejia was brought on and despite hitting Marlon Byrd in the head(which he was ok) threw 2 innings, while walking 2(1 HBP ), and striking out a batter.

Offense:
Once again tonight the bats were quiet early on, but got hot in the seventh inning when Angel Pagan took a fastball that ran inside & drove it out beyond the left field wall for his first home run of the season, and gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. Making his debut tonight was Ike Davis, who some say is the best offense prospect the Mets currently have, and boy did he look good, as he went 2-4 with an RBI single in the seventh. The other two runs, came on a Jason Bay RBI double which bounced up and against the wall in the seventh, and a past ball which allowed Jeff Francoeur to score. The Mets offense tonight scattered 9 hits.

Things to note:

Ike Davis went 2-4 with an RBI single & singled in his first at bat
Jason Bay looked much better as he went 2-3 with a walk.
David Wright continued to struggle tonight as he struck out 2 more times

According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork, Jerry Manuel and the Mets organization have decided it is time for the fans to see what they want. Multiple sources have leaked the Mets plan on promoting first base prospect Ike Davis within the next few days. Rubin did not indicate weather the move will take place tomorrow, though it could, it could also take place later in the week. Either or, Ike Davis will be playing for the big club in Flushing and hopefully can have an impact like the one Ryan Braun did in 2007.

John Maine took the hill tonight knowing that a bad start could turn into a demotion to Triple AAA, with prospect Dillon Gee waiting in the farm system. Maine was better tonight against St. Louis opposed to his start in Colorado as he was trying to use his fast ball more tonight, as his velocity has dropped big time since 2007. He still was not great though, giving up a three run homerun to Colby Rasmus in the 5th inning and his fastball topped out at around 91. Though Maine wasn't great, he put them in a decent position to win. Following Maine, was recently promoted pitcher Tobi Stoner who went 2.1 risky innings, which he ultimately was responsible for the lead runner during the Ludwick home run off of Igarashi which caused him to get the loss. Many people around the tean said Ryota Igarashi was not available to pitch tonight, though he pitched anyways.

Offense:
Once again tonight for the Mets, they were unable to score, none the less hit tonight as they only scattered 4 hits over 9 innings. They scored all 3 of their runs in the top half of the 2nd, when Angel Pagan hit a 2 run RBI single with the bases loaded, following the two runs scoring Pagan got caught between 1st & 2nd and Wainwright threw the ball away trying to nail Pagan at first which allowed Gary Matthews JR to score.

Mets designate Jacobs for assignment

The New York Mets designated infielder Mike Jacobs for assignment, recalling right-hander Tobi Stoner to add some bullpen depth one day after playing 20 innings. Jacobs was just 5 for 24 with one homer, a double and two RBIs in seven games. Does this mean Daniel Murphy is almost ready to come back? Manuel said he'd go with Frank Catalanotto and Fernando Tatis for the time being, and Catalanotto was at first base, Sunday night against the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright. I anticipated the call up of a relief pitcher when I first heard the news, since Manuel emptied the pen in last night's 20 inning affair. We will see how long untill Murphy comes back.

He did not look too sharp in the early going but regained his control of his fastball, and relocated his change up, mixing his pitches up making it very hard for the Texas hitters to pick up Pettittes stuff today. He gave the ball to Mariano Rivera in the 9th who shut the door on the Rangers, striking out 2 and completing the three game sweep.

Offense:

Mark Teixiera broke out of his slump today, and blasted his first home run of the season off of pitcher Rich Harden in the 3rd inning into the second deck of the right field porch. Brett Gardner went 2-3 today as he led of, with Derek Jeter recovering from a head cold, Brett also stole 2 bases the 7th and 8th of the season. Robinson Cano had a sac- fly in the 3rd inning, and catcher Jorge Posada blasted the Dustin Nippert offering over the right field wall in the 7th inning. Ramiro Pena gave the Yanks the lead in the 3rd inning following Tex's homer with a bases loaded single, a lead witch the bombers never let up.

Pitching:
Phil Hughes made his first start of the year tonight wearing the number 42 as everyone did on this great night were the MLB celebrated the legacy of Jackie Robinson. I think Hughes looked very good tonight despite the 5 walks. Hughes gave up one home run which came in the second inning off the bat of former Yankee Hideki Matsui. Hughes was a tad erratic but looked good & looked like he has potential to stay in the rotation and make a huge impact. Hughes also had good velocity on his fastball. Following Hughes, Dave Robertson came in for 1.2 innings, and was much better tonight then previous appearances as he only walked 1 batter. After Hughes, and Robertson, Damaso Marte came on to get two men, and then it was up to Joba Chamberlain & Mariano Rivera to shut it down, which they did.

Offense:
The Yankees offense looked much better today rather then yesterday when it looked like their bats were just shut down. After the Angels took the lead in the second off the Matsui homerun, Robinson Cano answered in the bottom half of the 2nd inning, with his 3rd homerun of the year which was a laser to right field. Derek Jeter helped out an inning later when he connected for his 2nd homerun of the season, and his second in 3 games. At that point when its 2-1 Yankees, after a Marcus Thames double, Curtis Granderson connected on an RBI Triple when scored Thames, and gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead. In the same inning, Derek Jeter continued his productive game as he came through with an RBI double, which scored Curtis Granderson. Robinson Cano came up in the bottom half of the 5th and smacked a two run shot his 4th homerun of the season & second of the game which gave the Yankees the 6-1 lead which pulled them to a victory tonight.

My Thoughts on Jose Reyes batting 3rd

So it looks like Jose Reyes will be batting 3rd this upcoming weekend in St. Louis. Jerry Manuel has been trying to make this happen for quite some time, and Manuel feels now Reyes is ready. So what do i think:
I think it is something the Mets NEED to do until Carlos Beltran returns. For 0ne, it spreads out the lineup a ton more and it will push David Wright to potentially the 5th hole which is more of an RBI hole. This also keeps Bay in the clean spot, and Francoeur down to sixth, so this move just moves everyone down more, so even after for instance a pitcher gets the 1,2, & 3 batters, the next inning he faces, Bay, Wright, & Frency. I am excited to see what Reyes brings to the table batting third, which really could be in effect as soon as tomorrow.Here is tomorrows potential batting order:

Pitching:

Jon Niese was not half bad in the first inning of the ball game, but then it got rough for Niese towards the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th inning. In the second the Rockies scored on an RBI Double by Clint Barmes . In the 3rd, Colorado scored 3 runs on a three run home run by outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, his first of the season. In the 4th the Rockies scored their 5th run, on an RBI single by Dexter Fowler to score the pitcher Aaron Cook. Now this was a strange play, with Aaron Cook on second Fowler ripped a single to right, and Cook was expected to be held up at third, but the cut off man Mike Jacobs did not look towards third base and threw to second as Fowler was trying to turn it into a double, on the throw Cook advanced home and they did not even get Fowler out at second. Now once again tonight the bullpen which was thought to be full of question marks coming into the season, was stellar again. Following Jon Niese, Rual Valdes, Fernando Nieve, Pedro Feliciano, & Ryota Igarashi all threw scoreless innings of relief. For some odd reason Jerry Manuel stuck 20 year old Jenrry Mejia in the biggest spot of the game & Chris Iannetta hit a bomb off a Mejia fastball.

Offense:

The Mets offense looked good early on, and early on in this ball game it looked as if the winning team was going to need 10 runs to win the ball game, that was not the case. In the top of the second the hottest hitter in the Mets lineup, Jeff Francoeur smacked his third home run. An inning after Francoeur's, in the third inning David Wright hit his 3rd home run of the season a two run show which gave them a 3-1 lead. The other two runs for the Mets came on a RBI single by Rod Barajas in the 8th & a RBI sac fly by Luis Castillo first pitch swinging in the 9th to drive Gary Matthews JR in to tie up the ball game. 5 runs may seem like a good amount excpet this team is just not hitting and cannot hit with runners in scoring position, tonight they were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position & are 15th in the NL with RISP AVG. Now this also is kind of on the part Jerry Manuel as well, for instance why do you pinch run Fernando Tatis for Mike Jacobs, and just save Tatis's bat opposed to what Manuel went with and had Alex Cora up against a lefty. My other problem with Jerry Manuel was why not stick another reliever in their except Mejia, he has NEVER been in that big of a spot, i guess it was just another one of Jerry's experiments.

BEST CASE SCENARIO IS WE GO HOME 6-6 WITH A SERIES FINALE WIN OVER THE ROCKIES & A SWEEP OF THE CARDINALS--HAHA GOOD LUCK--

Pitching:
Taking the mound for the second time in 2010 didn't look any better then the first time. Javier Vazquez never settled in and as a result of that took his second loss of the season & bolstered his ERA to 9.82. During the Post Game, manager Joe Girardi said Javier did not look comfortable, but he is not concerned yet & said that he truly believes he will get it going. Speaking about the bullpen now, the Yankees pen look decent despite Alfredo Aceves giving up one run in 1.2 inning. Following Vazquez & Aceves, Joba Chamberlain & Damaso Marte threw scoreless innings, and Marte looked awesome.

Offense:
For the most part today the Yanks offense was pretty quiet. Only two multi hit games on the part of Derek Jeter & Robinson Cano. Nick Swisher also put a good piece of the bat on the ball as he ripped his first triple of the 2010 campaign.

Pitching:
Well by looking at the box score you can tel it was another rough outing for John Maine as he gave up 8 earned runs pushing his ERA to 13.50 while 6 of those runs came in the 3rd inning. John's delivery was all over the place & he could not command his fastball though he did have his change up working. The Mets need a lengthy start from Jon Niese tomorrow as the bullpen tonight had to work 6 inning, which included appearances from Raul Valdes, Jenrry Mejia, Fernando Nieve, & Hisanori Takahashi. The only reliever that gave up a run was Fernando Nieve who had a rough seventh inning as he gave up 3 of the 11 runs tonight. Otherwise another solid nite from the Mets bullpen.

Offense:
The Mets offense didn't have much going tonight even though they scattered 9 hits one less than the Rockies had. The Mets hit one home run tonight which came in the Top of the 6th when David Wright smacked his 2nd home run of the season to left field. Other offensive notes; Jason Bay drove in his first Mets run on a single to center, and Jose Reyes looked a little bit more comfortable as he had 2 hits tonight.

Defense:
The Mets looked very sloppy tonight as John Maine started his own death inning as he botched a come backer, and then Jose Reyes looked a bit rusty as he was unable to play a ground ball which allowed a run to score; but an error was not charged to Reyes.

We need a change

I know tonight's Mets game is only there seventh except as i sit here watching the Rockies with a lengthy lead, i have to think to myself it is time for a change. I am not just saying we need a change because of these seven games, but also due to the dreadful 2009 season that is still stuck it my head, and i don't believe it will ever leave. What bothers me is they came into the season saying that they will be getting off to a great start; and through six games are 2-4 and with Colorado having a large lead tonight will be 2-5, and last time i checked those are not good records. When asked to Jeff Wilpon this Spring Training, "what will happen with Jerry if the Mets do not get off to a fast start" by one reporter, Wilpon responds " We don't have to worry about that, we will get off to a fast start." Following Johan Santana blowing up and giving up five runs on Sunday, Jerry Manuel said after the game that he is at fault because his team just wasn't prepared. These are just a few notable problems i have with the Mets:

Don't say things you don't mean
Don't get your fan base excited about something that is far fetched
Citi Field is starting to bother me; i hate all the balls dying on Wright & Bay in the gaps and on that huge wall.( You think Bay is still glad he came here )
With a line-up of Wright, Bay, Francoeur, & Reyes we have the lowest batting average with runners in scoring position
Getting NO production out of the first base slot, Tatis has been awful with Jacobs just as bad & Jerry Manuel & Omar Minaya refuse to call up Ike Davis while we have a top pitching prospect in the Majors who is throwing every other 3 days, when he should be starting in Triple AAA
Don't have a slogan " We Believe in Comebacks" when they go out on the field like their half dead
I hate seeing these commercials for 15 seconds about how John Maine believes in Comebacks, then when the commercial stops hes giving up 8 runs and walking 5 batters.
Citi Field is half empty every night in NEW YORK with a beautiful stadium, because of Omar Minaya stubbornness to grab a starter & bring up Mr. Ike Davis.
Same Crappy pitching rotation since 2008, because Omar Minaya believes they have the "POTENTIAL" when they need to produce NOW!
Ownership is a joke

Omar Minaya needs to say something so it does not look like the front office doesn't care about winning.
Omar Minaya is a flat out joke; still with the sign of 3 years to Oliver Perez & the lagging contract of Luis Castillo. As well as players such as Orlando Hudson & Jason Marquis wanting to come to flushing.
I FEEL LIKE WERE STILL 20 GAMES OUT IN SEPTEMBER & WE ARE ONLY 7 GAMES INTO THE SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if you were to ask me what i think should be done. I hate to say it so early, and because it is so early it won't happen but i think it is time Jerry Manuel moves on. So after Manuel who takes over; Bob Melvin? Dave Jauss? Wally Backman? Tim Teufal? To me i would either go with Bob Melvin or Wally Backman, i like the idea of having a former Met take charge especially one of Backman's caliber. Following Manuel gone, i would then Fire Omar Minaya which is an obvious move; Omar refused to add starting pitching and it has not looked great early on. I would take the same approach that Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik took were he built the team around pitching & defense something that FIT his ballpark. Now you may say, i am not optimistic, i am it's just that all we do is hear about great things and things to look for like an improvement with the team, but honestly we just never see it.

Phillies Notes

2 Notes that involve the Philadelphia Phillies, that may impact the NL East Race:

1) Jimmy Rollins might be heading to the Phillies DL List as he has a strained right calf. The injury occurred during the game against the Nationals yesterday.

2) On April 1st, MLB.com writer Todd Zolecki reported that the Phillies were indeed talking about a contract that would bring former Met pitcher Pedro Martinez back to the Phillies. Well today according to My Fox in Philadelphia, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro has confirmed that his club is in discussions with Pedro, but nothing is immanent yet.

The Rollins news is BIG if the Mets can hop back into the race, he is like Jose Reyes not the best player on the team but is the catalyst and gets his club going.
With the Pedro news, he showed a lot last season with the Phillies, and they are smart for wanting to bring him back. I have said numerous times that i would like to see him back in the Orange & Blue just based on the current staff and how well he looked last season.

Andy Pettitte limited the Angels to five hits over six scoreless innings, walking three and striking out six in a 100-pitch effort, earning his first win of the season. Chan Ho Park took over, throwing 2 strong innings, only giving up a solo homer to firstbasemen Kendry Moralas. Joe Girardi then called on David Robertson to close the game out, who was not able to do that. After 2 singles and a bunt base hit Bobby Abreu stepped up to the plate lunching Robertson's breaking ball into the right field porch for a grand slam. Clinching his teeth, the skipper then called on the sandman, Mariano Rivera who shut the door on the Angels.

Offense:

Nick Johnson slugged his first home run, a first-inning shot to right field off Angels starter Ervin Santana. After the captain Derek Jeter belted a solo shot in the third and contributed a bases loaded single off Santana's leg in the fourth, bringing home Robinson Cano. The Yankees added to their lead int the bottom of the eighth inning, thanks to an RBI double from Jorge Posada and a RBI single by new Yankee Curtis Granderson.

Should Met Fans be worried about Johan Santana?

After coming off elbow surgery which required the removal of loose bone ships in the elbow, Johan Santana looks far from stellar. Santana who was limited to 25 starts last season, took the mound for the second time in 2010 on Sunday and looked awful. In the first he was all over the place giving up 2 walks & 4 runs due to a Josh Willingham grand slam. Some say that Johan Santana looked as if his elbow was bothering him as he was clenching his teeth and looked very uncomfortable. After the game, Santana said his fastball wasan't on and it was cutting and he was unable to command it.
Now to me, we all know Santana is a competitor so it makes me think if he might be hurting and not telling anyone about his issue. On the other hand, he has only had two starts, and his first start was very Johan Santana like. If you ask me, i am not worried yet, if he gets knocked around next start i will be scared out of my mind, but for right now let's go fight in Colorado & hope to take the brooms out.
